ZINC Dust

Zn Dust is a grey fine powder produced from Zn metal through a process called Atomization.

Economic value:

Zn dust is a valuable material in the industrial field and has a wide range of applications such as; paints coatings, pharmaceuticals and other industrial applications due to its unique properties including high reactivity, electrical conductivity and anti-corrosive properties.

Industrial Applications:

Some of the common industrial applications of zinc dust include:

·     Paints and Coatings:  Zinc dust is used as a pigment in paints and coatings to provide corrosion protection and improve the durability of the finished product.

·      Batteries:  Used in the production of zinc-carbon batteries and alkaline batteries as a key component of the battery’s anode.

·     Pharmaceuticals:  Used in chemical reactions, such as in the production of organic compounds and pharmaceuticals.

·   Galvanizing: Used in the galvanizing process to provide a protective coating to steel and iron products, preventing corrosion and extending their lifespan.

·     Metallurgy: Zinc dust is used as a reducing agent in metallurgical processes, such as the production of other metals from their ores.

·     Electronics: Used in electronic applications, such as in the production of electronic components and materials.

Zn Dust manufacturing process:

Zn dust is manufactured through a process called Atomization in which Zn metal in a form of Zn ingots is charged and melted into gas/oil operated furnace, the molten Zn is then vaporized at 1050°C and sprayed through a nozzle into a chamber filled with nitrogen. As the molten zinc droplets pass through the chamber, they are rapidly cooled and solidify into fine particles, forming the zinc dust.

The formed Zn dust is then collected in a condenser and processed to remove any impurities. It may undergo further treatment to achieve the desired particle size and purity. Once the zinc dust has been processed and tested for quality, it is packaged according to customer needs and prepared for distribution to various industries.

Characteristics of Zn dust:

Physical Characteristics:

·        Appearance: Fine, grayish powder.

·     Particle Size: Varies depending on the manufacturing process, typically ranges from a few micrometers to tens of micrometers.

·        Density: Around 7.14 g/cm³

·        Melting Point: Approximately 419.5°C (787.1°F).

·        Boiling Point: Approximately 907°C (1665°F).

Chemical Characteristics:

·        Composition: Consists mainly of zinc (Zn).

·        Reactivity: Zinc dust is reactive with acids and can undergo oxidation-reduction reactions.

·        Corrosion Resistance: Zinc has excellent corrosion resistance, making zinc dust useful in anti-corrosion coatings and paints.

·        Conductivity: Zinc is a good conductor of electricity.
